 SYNOPSIS 

Lei Lei’s grandfather, Lei, is telling his story. In the 1950s he is a young father of three, living in the city of Ningdu. Following the leaders' call to learn from farmers, he goes to the countryside, leaving behind his sick wife and children. When his wife passes away, he goes home and flies over the masses, busy producing iron and steel. Though reluctant, he has no choice but to send his kids to child services, represented by a small bird cage. As time passes, Lei meets another woman, Jin, and they start a new life with his children. But the family again faces trouble and is broken apart as the country enters turbulent times...
