Director, screenwriter
Born in Busan, he studied Art and Cinema in France (2001-2014). In 2011, he won the Grand Prize for the short <PROMESSE> at the Asiana International Short Film Festival. In 2012, his film project <SECRET OF MY FATHER> was selected in the Cannes Film Festival Residency I Cinefondation. In same year, his documentary <LOOKING FOR NORTH KOREANS> was awarded Jury's Special Mention at Cinema Planeta 2013 (Mexico), nominated for Best Political Documentary at Hamburg Film Festival 2013 (Germany) and nominated for Best Documentary at Jihlava IDFF 2012 (Czech Republic). In 2013, he co-directed <THE PIG> with Taiwanese director Singing Chen in the Omnibus Taipei Factory, awarded Best Actress (Asian Competition - Tokyo Short Shorts 2014), selected in Directors' Fortnight in Cannes Film Festival, Busan IFF, Hongkong IFF. In 2014, he worked with French film director, Jeanne Labrune, as script consultant. In 2016, his two movies were selected in the Cannes Film Festival : <MADAME B> in ACID, <HITCHHIKER> in Directors' Fortnight. <MADAME B> won Best Documentary (Silver St-George) in Moscow International Film Festival and Best Documentary (Golden Eye) in Zurich Film Festival. His short film <HITCHHIKER> financed by the Ministry of Unification, was awarded Best Director in KISFF, Best Actor (Asian Competition) in Tokyo Short Shorts 2017. In 2017, he presented the documentary <LETTERS> co-directed with Marte Vold, co-produced with Norwegian production Mer Film, in Busan, Göteborg, CPH:DOX Film Festivals. <LETTERS> was awarded Best Filmmaker 2018 in West Lake Int. Doc Festival (China). His first narrative feature film <BEAUTIFUL DAYS>, played by famous Korean actress Lee Na young, produced by Peppermint & company - The Witch (2018), V.I.P (2017), I Saw the Devil (2010) -, co produced by Zorba production, was selected as Opening Film in Busan International Film Festival 2018. In 2021, his second narrative feature film <Fighter> was selected in Berlinale Generation. The film won Best Actress and Netpac in Busan Int. Film Festival 2020.
